Dr Charlotte Hoskins

Dr Charlotte N. Hoskins is a social and visual anthropologist specialising in kinship, gender, and reproduction, and in their intersections with labour and health in Northern Amazonia. Working across text, material culture, and film, her ethnography examines how capitalist transformations localise within the body and reshape relations to place, centring the embodied experiences of those who regenerate life in these settings. Her research programme is grounded in over a decade of continuous ethnographic engagement with Makushi communities in Guyana's North Rupununi.

She holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, where her thesis, Makushi Women Feed: On the Body and Social Change in Guyana’s Indigenous Hinterland, offered a feminist intervention in Amazonian theory. Following her doctoral work, she received a British Museum Endangered Material Knowledge Programme grant, administered by the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography, to co-direct a multimedia documentation project, alongside the Makushi Research Unit. Currently, with support from the Fyssen Foundation, she is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie Sociale (Collège de France/EHESS), where she is drafting a monograph titled A Working Relationship: Women’s Bodies, Livelihoods and Land. 

She has served as a tutor across numerous Oxford colleges, designing curricula for the papers Anthropological Analysis and Interpretation; Space, Place, & Society; Geographical Controversies; and the Anthropology of Lowland South America. She has also convened specialised postgraduate training in Auto & Co-produced Ethnography. Drawing on practice-based methods, she systematically integrates visual media, archives, material culture and innovative object-based pedagogy into her courses. 

Her films have screened at premier forums, including Visions du Réel, Punto de Vista, FIDOCS, Timehri Film Festival, the Royal Anthropological Institute, the American Anthropological Association Society for Visual Anthropology,  and the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America.
